Beaus Bad News

I can not type a post, my heart is breaking in pieces. Below is copy paste of Vets diagnosis.
More when I can....

to me

Sandra and Robert,

Beau's examination and images have been evaluated and his findings formulated.  Beau's got several issues of concern.  The primary cause of his R rear leg lameness is due to his anterior cruciate ligament.  Like a football player, Beau's ACL is injured and it's painful to walk due to movement of his knee.  His L knee is not great but it's relatively normal and functional.  Beau's hips add to the challenges.  He has dysplasia -- neither of his hip joints have smoothly operating parts.  The ball part of the joint does not sit nicely within the socket part of the joint.  Specifically, the L hip is subluxated or sits a little outside of the joint.  Both are likely somewhat discomforting and, again, complicate the issue with this R knee.

Options may be limited.  For large breed dogs like Beau, surgery for the knee is the recognized gold standard.  But, his other problems may preclude him from being a good candidate for such surgery or complicate the healing process.  Remember, while his R leg heals from surgery, he's got to rely on his L leg to support him and it's not in the best of shape/condition to do that.

Inevitably, most such injuries eventually heal through scarring and contraction.  It's not an easy path -- nor a short path -- but, given time and patience and the necessary mediations, most dogs with ACL injuries will eventually heal.

My recommendations for Beau if you choose not to pursue a surgical consult (and I can refer you to any number of surgeons in the area for a better idea of what options are available): time, rest, restricted activity; a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug like meloxicam; an analgesic like gabapentin and a joint formula (GAG product) for supporting joint remodeling and physical therapy (water therapy, massage, or laser therapy).

You likely have some questions in regard to my findings.  Please don't hesitate to call or write should you have such.

Thank you,
Dr. Doyens

Old age is no place for wimps is it Beau? We are really sad to read about your football injury. Lots of good players end their top class career early because of injury, but they find other ways to enjoy their lives. We are sure that the humans around you will do their utmost to ensure your quzlity of life and we know you will be glooded with love. Paw smacks Mr T

Hate the diagnosis, but have to say, I'm SO relieved it wasn't bone cancer. I know you'll do whatever you can to ensure Beau's kept pain-free. He's gonna LOVE the attention!

Oh my, I am so sorry! He did say it will heal with time, so that is good! And maybe a surgical consult couldn't hurt (except in the pocket) because they would know a bit more about Beau's recovery from any procedures, since the surgeons have done a lot of these operations. Did he say how much pain Beau may be in? I'm sure the meds will help. Is it hard to give him pills? I am so glad it is not bone cancer, that had been in the back of my mind.

Sadly I know only too well the dilemma of ACL tears, having gone through three dogs and five tears between them. Your situation is worsened for sure by the hip issue. I will write to you this afternoon and give you my experience. The prime consideration needs to be Beau's comfort level and your physical ability to help. I am so sorry.

That made my heart drop too but it could have been a lot worse with bone cancer. A long time ago (prior to 2009) we had to big dogs live here, real sister pups. They both had those problems and we restricted their activity (they loved to chase tennis balls prior) and did the meds and supplements. They did pretty well for a long time, it was work and a bit tough but they were both worth it too. We love you Beau, easy does it pal.

I just thought of something after I sent my comment. 15 years ago I had a Corgi that used a cart to get around when he lost the use of his back legs. He got around really well. Maybe that could be an option down the line for Beau. Don’t give up.

I'm so sorry to hear that diagnosis. That's not what you wanted to hear but there is hope. Those meds will help a lot with pain, and Beau can heal over time. Big hugs to all of you.

Poor Beau, he must really be hurting. The one good thing coming out of all this is that the vet took the time to write down everything that's going on with Beau's health. I've never had a vet do that. It's just so much easier to understand what's going on when it is in writing. At least for me. Plus now Bob has seen it in writing too. I hope that as time goes by and Beau takes his medicine and gets his rest, he will feel better. It will be a difficult time for you guys, but if Beau has a strong heart and he's OK for the rest of him, maybe he will recover. And you will just love him and take such very good care of him. Spoil him...
