Cinco de Mayo

Let's Taco bout

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day, which falls on Sunday, May 5 in 2024, is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.

I knew it was more celebrated here than in Mexico, and we hear about it some down here in the Southwest. Anyway, Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

It seems to be very popular to celebrate it here in the states but I've never done so. I think most people around here use it as an excuse to drink.

The history behind such happy events is oft' tinged by pain and suffering. Thank goodness there is a happy ending, and a culture survives and celebrates its magic.

So it has nothing to do with Mexico's independence. Hmmm..m
Having lived in the American southwest a big chunk of my life, I agree with Ann about it being an excuse to drink. Ole'!

We do have a large Mexican population, and it makes for many great Mexican restaurants! (some better than others - I think we've tried them all!)
