Last week I spent 87 hours under the giant elephant ears counting the Crimity Crickets Chirps. Early that morning Mama said, Beau I have a mission for you. If you choose to accept it, you must go find Crimity Cricket and count his chirps for 87 hours. I told Mama I wanted to know why I had to count Crimity Crickets Chirps before I accepted the mission.
Her answer was shocking and something I did not know. She told me she had dropped our thermometer and the red stuff ran out and now she had no way to know just how hot it was outside. She told me Crimity Cricket would help me tell the temperature. She said all you have to do is count how many times Crimity chirps in 15 seconds, then tell me the number and I will use the calculator and tell you the exact temperature.
I thought this sounded easy, but each time I got to 15 seconds, I would forget where I was and that is why it took me 87 hours to count chirps for 15 seconds. Crimity was chirping so fast I could hardly count fast enough. You see, crickets chirp faster the hotter it gets and slower the colder it gets.
Crimity was chirping like a machine gun sounds on TV, almost to fast to count. Butt, I did it and mama said our temperature was 97 F degrees. At first, she said there was no formula given to figure out Celsius butt I said, Silly Mama, Crimity will tell me how many chirps, I will tell you and you will add 40 and that will tell us our temperature and you use your phone and convert it. That means if we were using Celsius for Crimity Cricket, he would say 36.
I said to Mama, this seems like a lot of work in this hot outdoors, and my suggestion is for you to drive to Walmart and buy a new thermometer.
This concludes my tale, and we are waiting to see if you Believe it or Not!

Each species has its own chirp and chirping is temperature dependent. Crickets chirp faster with increasing temperature and slower with decreasing temperatures.
The simplest method is to count the number of chirps in 15 seconds and add 40. The sum usually approximates the temperature within a few degrees Fahrenheit. the link will give you the Formula, it is below and is beyond My brain and Mamas Brain. Yet another Believe it or Not.
Field Cricket: T = 50+[(N-40)/4]
Snowy Tree Cricket: T = 50 + (N - 92 / 4.7)
Katydid: T = 60 + (N - 19 / 3)

I knew that somehow a cricket's chirps could tell the temps, but not how! This is all very interesting! I didn't know about adding 40 either. Or that they get faster with more heat. Another great bit of info from Sherlock Snapper!
We knew we hear them more when it's hot but didn't know they speeded up as well. Flies seem to go faster (and buzz more) in hot weather too but probably not in predictzle ways like your crickets. Paw smacks Mr T

How cool. I had no idea you could tell the temperature that way. While you're mom is getting a new thermometer she might want to get a new clock too. I think your calculation of 87 hours might be a little off :)...lol

We've heard of the cricket predictor thing but sometimes we have so many crickets chirping (especially at night) that it's difficult to hear just one of them to count their chirps. BOL!
OMDs that is some tale...whether or not is or is not true doesn't matter it was fun and entertaining.
