Mama found this video on YouTube and Popped me in as the Host of the Talk Show.
Every Morning she stands in the back yard and listens to the mating call of a Barred owl.
she can't see him, but boy is he loud.
Sunday when we walked, he was making the mating call sitting in the Banyon treat a block away from our house. at 7:30 am, we could not see him, but we could hear him.
The coopers hawk we see daily was gone. that is another story.
She is beyond excited, because the Screech owls, are making their mating calls.
Per the video below and other articles, both of these owls are common in our area of
Florida and they both live in rotted holes in trees.
the yard behind us is a JUNGLE.
Just this week she sits and watches out the front window Sparrows, Robins, Flickers and when she backed out the car yesterday our yard and the one next door had at least 87 hundred Robins.
She said actual it was around 50 in each yard. they were rushing around eating bugs from the dirt/grass
got this shot with the iPhone from inside the living room window. just multiply by 100 and use imagination |
To hear what we hear, play the video

When the robins get here in the spring, there are dozens and dozens. And the males all fight in the yerds for their territory. We NEVER see an owl in the wild around here. And yes, his call does sound like "Who Cooks For You?"
I love Barred Owls and would love to hear its call in our neighborhood. I will never forget what it sounds like thanks to you. I am imagining one in a chef’s hat and a wooden spoon under its wing.
we love owls... and the mama would like to have one (our dad said she is an owl and needs no other LOL)
Loving the idea of an owl that's asking who is doing the cooking!
An old friend from when I was growing up has a brother who takes pictures of all kinds of things. Lately he's been posting lots of pictures of owls. I've never seen or heard one but would love to.
Hello,
Beau, your Mama did a great job adding your to the owl photo. Cute capture of the Robin. I would be happy to stand outside in your yard listening the owls calling, all the birds songs are a happy sound and a simple pleasure I love. HUGS, have a happy day!

My word, Beau, this is a wonderfurs post today! I adored listening to the owl and reading all about it and the other owls. There is a Barn Owl that teases me with its calling some nights. All my years here I have never been able to spot it, but have heard it many times - a classic "Twit? Whooo?!!" Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx
We have screech owls and great horned around us, but we don't think we've ever heard a barred owl around our house. They do have an interesting call.
Thank you - I really enjoyed this post and learned. We saw an owl when we lived at the house and boy when we looked at him - he starred right back at us.
HOL, hoot out loud, I love that video
Hugs Cecilia
ve not yet seen a robin...unless THAT was what the Peregrine falcon was carrying yesterday...(Mom thinks it was a quail though). How exciting that you have all those cool owls! where there are loads of birds is so much fun as there is so much to watch and learn about! Thanks for the sounds! It make Jo Jo come out of the bedroom to see where the bird was! Purrs Marvelous Marv!
Our front yard is teeming with robins this morning. They love to play in the standing water like little kids.
That's sure interesting about the barred owl sound. Honestly, they creep me out. Them and the hawk I glimpsed yesterday doing slow circles. The circle of life can sure be cruel.
I do think they are one of the prettiest owls around.
What we wanna know is where this owl is barred FROM? XOX Xena and Chia
Some years back, we had a pair of barn owls living in our attic and their kids were incredibly noisy. They haven't been around lately and we miss them!
Woofs,
Ollie
Your photo is quite the hoot Beau! We're got an owl or two here. When the Dad goes out at night to pick up the feral food bowls he can hear them, but we've not seen them at all.
Those owls are adorable Beau, but not as handsome as you!
We have a few robins that like to hang out in our "waterfall".
xoxo,
Rosy
Great post Beau. We love it all but we particularly love the 'cute alert'. Your humum is very clever. Paw smacks Mr T
That is so neat!!!
Oh my gosh Beau! Ohhhhh my gosh! Barred owls are my favorite owl. And then burrowing owls is 2nd. To have owls in the neighborhood would be a dream come true for me! You two made my day!! Really.
We also have owls. Lady thinks it is cool we can live so far apart and yet share some cool nature. Hope you have been keeping well. We survived camp and will be blogging about all the adventures next week. Lee and Phod
