Our Inner Clocks

Mama says I have a clock in my head. If we do something at the same time each day, by the 3rd time, that is added to my inner clock. I know these times

3 am wake up time and my dog food
6 am parents breakfast and my 2nd breakfast
6:40 or as soon as breakfast is over, walk my Mama
10 AM mama gets a watermelon slushy, I get a spoon of it
12 Noon, Lunch, people and me
3 pm exactly 12 hours after dog food, another cup of dog food.
5 pm lite dinner for all of us and bed time at 7:30.
AT Any Time, if anyone forgets, my alarm goes off.
It sounds like growling woosss.
Take it away now Mama.

Its YOUR Time to Talk.

My parents ate at 7, 12, and 5. Daddy had hissy fits if anything interfered in his schedule and all things were arranged around his eating times.
My mother knew to make appointments around these times.
Mother and my brother had no clock in their head.
When someone had our family over for dinner, which happens a lot since Daddy was the Pastor of a church, he would grumble and growl because they always wanted us to eat at 6 or 7.
He swore it made him sick to eat that late.

I have a clock in my head, it is the FOOD clock, I don't have to look at the clock at any of the above listed times, I just know, even if I am in a Doctors office, my stomach tells me it is 10 am.
at any of our EATING times, my stomach feels empty. Now I understand Daddy
I schedule around those times too.
Bob has a Time Clock in his head. he doesn't need a watch, He can set the time, like if we need to be somewhere at a certain time, he sets it in his head and knows when to come in and get dressed.
We have never used an alarm clock in 38 years. He sets it for what time to get up.

Want to get up at 2 and leave at 3 to beat the traffic, just tell him and he wakes up.

My youngest son, has the clock but did not until he was 40 years old and is now an early bird
My oldest son has no clock and has been since birth a night owl.
Genetics? Trained? Dog in another life?
Which are YOU?

Really, you never need to set an alarm? And Bob always knows what time it is? Didn't he used to be a sailor? They can tell the time by the sky. So one son is a night owl and the other is an earlybird! Well, each childis different from the other, and has to make his own special place. And Beau, animals (sorry for the term) are always so much more in touch with nature!

I have a clock in my head, inherited from both parents I think. I never lose track of time. AS for dogs, it was my first one, Hamish the Westie, who was the precision timer. I used to take him with me to an informal German language class where he would quietly sit under the table until the 90 minute session had ended. If we went just one minute over, he would get up and bark. Our teacher (that's 'M' of 'M and J' fame) used to call him "unsere Wecker" that's "our alarm clock".
Cheers! Gail.

we have the same inner clock... we go out at 3 am too ... but we get no food.... do you know what we have to set or to reset at that clock to get food too? or do we have to re-set our staff?

We creatures that walk on 4 know about time keeping don't we Beau? My F human has an internal clock. she like to try and override it sometimes but I keep her honest. My Mr B human might have a clock but I suspect he forgets (or omits) to wind it up. F says he is always late. paw smacks Mr T

Beau, it sounds like you spend your days (and nights) eating!

Interesting about body clocks. #1 works at home and on days she does not need to interact with anyone, she has been known to breakfast at 10am, lunch at 2-3pm, and she almost always has dinner at 9pm! As for me, I eat when she gets up, generally around 8 or 8:30am, and again in the evening around 6:30pm.

Woofs,
Ollie

Hello,
I never set an alarm unless I have an early appointment. There may be a day when my body clock is not working properly and I would oversleep. The grand-dogs have a time set for eating too. My hubby is the night owl. HUGS, have a happy day!

Used to have that internal ticker... now, it is totally scrambled and by menosomnia. That said, I am very good at waking up in plenty time if there something that needs doing of a morning. Beau, I do know that having a pupster tends to regulate the clock really well! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

No way could I NOT set an alarm. I would never be on time for work.
When it comes to eating I'm pretty schedules. I rarely eat breakfast but my lunch is always the same time and dinner is early. Growing up we had dinner at 4:30 and now 4:00 is my preferred time. If my daughter invites me for dinner it's usually 5:00 or later. That always feels way too late to me.

Walter is our alarm clock in the family. Millie and mom Cindy would sleep late if dad and Walter didn't wake them up every day. They don't need to eat at specific times like the boys in the house do. BOL!

Well, I think this is fascinating. Especially the part about Bob's time clock. Back in the 80's I attended this 48-hour seminar, Silva Mind Control -- check it out! Anyway, the facilitator talked about that very thing and how everyone can train their minds to do the same thing. Of course, I was skeptical and didn't throw my alarm clock away -- but neither do I doubt it.

Personally, I'm comforted by mealtime routine. That's the way I was raised. But Tom's all over the place; lately, he's been eating his 'supper' about 3 am. We adapt. *sigh*

Beau I agree with Mom.
I sure do wish Madi's inner clocks were more in line with ours.
She insisted on being fed at 4 am and 4 pm...and of course all hours in between. I wised up finally after a few 4 am wake ups. Left more kibble in her bowl overnight so she was ok til about 5 am

I read the responses too - and your blog. I am surprised so many people have clocks and that they (you) get up so early. I guess I don't really have a clock per say. I do know when the time change happens it takes me awhile. Then this is the first year in decades I haven't had to worry about getting kids up for school - after a summer break. But I am sort of flexible - in sleep times. lol

Our Dad is a night owl and our Mom is an early bird. All us kitties have our clocks to and we know when it's feeding time AND medicine time.

We are like you Beau, and know when it is food time, snack time and bedtime!

Mama is an early bird and Daddy is a night owl...but lately, we are all up by 6am and in bed by 10pm!

I love this post. You made me remember our Angel Little Bit and her schedule. She had one and she would let you know if you didn't follow her schedule. Hubby and I have a schedule too. It's a good thing.

Have a woof woof day and week, Beau. My best to your peeps. ♥

That is very interesting. My dad always ate at set times. It was hard for me to eat with him because I eat when I'm hungry. I have always been one who wakes up before and alarm but I still set them. Dogs definitely have alarms in them.
