Ten Digit Dialing

p

Thank you Ms Ann from Zoolatry, Mama said you did this in honor of her being a helicopter mom, and now I am a helicopter and can keep up with her

Mama said to let you all know she got an email from her phone provider stating

New Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Procedures
Even when calling in our own Area Code, we must dial all 10 numbers.
It seems they have added so many of the 3 digits numbers, for example 911, they ran out of numbers to use and now we have to dial 10 numbers to call our next-door neighbor
AND if you have speed dial without the area code and did not put one in your phone, the speed dial will not work.
Did any of you ever have on 3 numbers for a phone number?
Mama said for 2 years when she was 13 and 14, they had a phone on the wall and to make a call
she had to turn the handle round and round and talk to the operator to make her call and when they lived there, there phone number was only 2 numbers

How Far We Have Come

Call me If you have a CAN with a string on it

And we can talk.
Let's hear from all of you. Do you dial 10 numbers to call?

We have to do the same thing now, as well! We have a big wall phone in the kitchen. And one day about a year ago, Anne Marie walked over to it, picked up the reciever, and said "What IS this?"

Here in Aberdeen I have to dial eleven numbers to call my next door neighbour on the landline. But the landline gets very little use these days. My father told me that when he was a boy their phone number was Hartfield 403. My grandfather, the village butcher, was the third person in the village to get a phone, after the vicar (401), and the doctor (402). My uncle and aunt continued to live in the house until the late 1990s. By then the phone number had expanded to 6 digits, but the final three were still 403.
Cheers, Gail.

They started that here a while back. It's really quite annoying. Some numbers you can dial the area code and the number and others you have to dial 1 then the area code and the number.
You look totally adorable in that hat Beau.

Hello,
Yes, I use the area code when dialing any number. We gave up our land line years ago. Beau, you looks so cute with the helicopter hat. HUGS, have a happy day!

That picture made us laugh, Beau!

In the early days when #1 had her summer cottage in Prince Edward Island, she already had a 10 digit number, but it was on a party line! That was always interesting.

Woofs,
Ollie

Oh yes, that happened to our Sydney phone numbers not long before I departed those shores... My grandparents, when they finally got a phone hookup on the farm, had only three numbers... Blainslie 434, I seem to recall. By the time my parent were at the stage of having a landline, four numbers were being used. Here in Dunoon, on a landline, we can still dial only the six-digit ID numbers, but if calling from a mobile phone, it is necessary to add the five-digit area code, equalling the 11 that Gail mentions.

Loving that helo-hat, Beau boy! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

Wow ... they ran out of numbers? What an example of your population explosion!

Back in the 50's, yes. At my grandmother's farm in Minnesota she'd have to ask the operator to make a call. Hers was a party line which I found enormously entertaining until some old witch caught on: "Who's that listening?" Ha!

Beau, you look adorable as a helicopter! You could be a greeting card!

You are so cute in your helicopter hat, Beau. We aren't required to dial all 10 numbers but we live very close to the dividing line between area codes. Whenever I add a new contact I always add the area code because if we were calling from an area outside our area code it would need to be included. I'm sure there are some old numbers in my phone that don't have the area code but they rarely, if ever, get used.

We have been using 10 digit dial for some time.
Our area code is 919...I cannot tell you how many misdials
of 911 they had for the first few months. I did it once but was cured when the EMS came on the line to ask my emergency.
I wanted to say my emergency is I need help training my old mind to not dial 911.
Hugs Cecilia

Remember what everyone else remembers! 3-digit numbers; a 9-party line, you could only answer on your "ring tone"! But more recently, living on Florida's Space Coast, when it fought hard (against Chicago I think) to get Area Code 3.2.1 (to represent the countdown) and ultimately won ... then some years later, as the Orlando/Orange Country area had outgrown it's usage of the 407 area code ... it began to "steal from the 3.2.1. code!!!).
Believe me, for Space Coast residents, WHAT AN INSULT ... they did not then and do not now, have any right to 3.2.1, but they got it nonetheless. Florida's massive population explosion will soon find all of you with such lengthy phone numbers it will be like
entering computer code! Then of course, there are those like me, who moved North, but
kept that famous 3.2.1. area code ... tee, hee ... and I'm not giving it up!

It's been that way here for some time.

Have a fabulous day and rest of the week. Scritches to Beau. ♥

That hat could be fun for hovering over the pool Beau! The Dad said he remembers 3 numbers briefly then it went to 4. We've had 10 digit calling for quite a while here.

Now you have a helicopter mom for a helicopter dog! Only 10 digits when we're calling a different area code, which is more and more frequent nowadays with people being able to keep their cell number no matter where they are in the country.

I know we got the message from spectrum about having to use the whole number. It's always something!

No. Not to call next door neighbor, but to call say terre haute, we do.

We have been doing it for years. You do get used to it.

Hi friend, Ojo here! Nice hat! My person remembers pushing the dial thing around and around, but it was still seven times. Also yes, I frequently get mistaken for "Eye". But I am not Eye. I am a little Girl Bear. Thanks for inspiring our post!

We have to dial the area code too. It was a nuisance at first, but easy enough now.

Mom remembers party lines. Vaguely...we had to listen for our special ring before answering. When Mom moved to Midway back in the 90's, when calling within the village you only has to dial the last 4 digits, and 7 for the nearest time. Mom does not have a clue what the landline rules are anymore, she has a cell phone and it is a Vancouver number, so Mom has to use 10 digits when calling anybody. Great post, Mom loved reading it and all the comments! Beau, LOVE LOVE LOVE the helicopter hat!
