Way back in 2014, At 11:20 AM Friday morning the above ALARM Barker Baby went off..
LOUD WILD BARKING! at the sliding glass door.
MOM! MOM! there is Aix sponsa in the pool .. no kidding.. there is..
And there they were, Mama Wood Duck and 6 tiny babies.
OH NO! I screamed.. Jake will eat them..
There was a problem. The babies could not get out. Mama would jump out and they would struggle to follow, Mama jumped back in and back out, and we watched them struggle.
the water was to low in the pool, it was a 12 inch jump for a tiny baby.
Bob swam around and scooped them out and she attacked him, then flew to the pool deck and flopped all over the yard like her wing was broken trying to get him away from her babies.

Mama duck ran off in the Palmetto bush and 4 babies followed her.
the other 2 kept getting back in the pool.
Mama and 4 babies disapeared.
Jake and Baby and Mama and Daddy waited inside
the house.
We waited for an hour, she did not come back.
Bob caught the 2 babies 3 times and put them out and right back in they went.
we searched all over for the family, they were gone.
4th time we put them in a box, and we let the dogs out and they verified she was gone which meant we were left with orphan baby Wood Ducks..

I called Wildlife Rescue and they said Wood ducks will not come back for their young.
She lost 5 of her babies, 3 to traffic on our street and we took the 2 babies to the drop off at Bayshore Animal hospital for Wildlife to pick up.
They would raise them and let them go free.
We hope she and her babies lived a long and happy life.
These ducks were the most exciting and fun wildlife ever in our yard.

What excitement. That's sad that she wouldn't go back for the last two. At least they went somewhere safe though.
Beau, what a story! I am sorry for that Momma Duck. It is sad she did not return for her babies. I hope the 2 you helped taking them to the rescue lived a happy life. HUGS, have a happy day!

A wonderful, though bittersweet story ~ thank you for the retelling. And the photos are charming. Nature has a way we often cannot understand, but it is it's way.

I'm sure glad at least a couple of them were saved and taken care of to fly again.
That sure was an exciting tale about those ducks. We're glad you were able to find a wildlife rehab to take the two orphans.
Nature sure can be a wild ride sometimes!We are also glad the two chicks had a chance in life because of your rescue!!
That was an interesting story! Sad about the lost ducks.
So sad, but the ones that survived I hope had a long and happy life.

WOW!! I don't remember this post at all! What drama! It would make a dandy six episode T.V. series! I would watch it! And your pics are so good, too! What is WRONG with those Wood Ducks that they will abandon their babies?? Well, at least she made some effort to distract...

Oh gosh, my heart is breaking for those little ones left behind. So good to know there are still people like you and Bob who took them where they could be rehabbed in a safe and secure environment!
It was nice to see Baby. And how different Wood Ducks look from what I am used to seeing. Your story has a sad/happy feel to it. Kuddos to you for saving the babies who wouldn't follow their Mama.
