Beau loves for me to tell him stories. When he sits on the sofa like this, I sit beside him and tell stories and wave my arms, animated stories. He hangs on every word. His eyes focus on my face and he will sit as long as I talk, or until bob and I burst into laughter watching him.
I tell him Once upon a time stories about Big Brindle Dogs
Until a few nights ago, I thought he appeared to understand every word.
After we watched The Last of the Mohicans, I think he is hoping for a translator.
below is the scene where the Huron and Mochican Chiefs are speaking their language, and a French sodldier is translating it into English for the English Soldier.
I told Bob while we watched, and it did not have the captions, it was just the words, this is what Beau Hears, What we here when the Chief talks. Or the French soldier.
Try to imagine without the captions, close your eyes and listen to the chief.
a few seconds will show you what Beau Hears When I talk to him.
No Wonder Beau stares at me.
if will not play here is the link Last of the Mohicans-Huron Chief

I think Beau just loves the sound of your reasurring voice and the attention! He knows at these times you are all his. The video is a good example for sure!
Dogs might not understand words but as said above, they understand tone of voice and are comforted by familiar sounds. Bertie's deafness saddens me mostly because he no longer has access to this form of reassuring communication (which is why, I think, cuddles are even more important to him these days).
Cheers, Gail.
the boys liked it too... they often listen to documentaries in tv, that's the best way to send them to dreamland LOL
I doubt that Beau would care what you were saying. Just to listen to you speak is enough for him
Hello,
Beau loves the sound of his Mama's voice, the attention and comforting words.
Take care, enjoy your day!

What they all said above... also, it is quite likely that Beau was paying attention for any 'key' words - the ones he does actually know and which would be words to act upon! YAM xx
I think he does just live the sound of your voice....judtvlike you love his.
Beau probably understands completely, he just won't let you know, that would ruin his fun!
I know he understands that you love him and wants to communicate he loves you!
Great analogy! I'd love to see a video clip of you reading to Beau. (Bob, I'm looking at you.) Must admit, like Caraleigh, I've been trying to teach 'human' to the girls. Grace is totally indifferent to the whole idea, but Macie's catching on. She totally knows where I'm going when I say, "Momma's going to take her blood pressure", or "Momma's going on the computer."
How sad for those poor pups whose humans don't chat with them.
We can just imagine how much Beau enjoys hearing all your stories. He is so lucky to have such fun pawrents like you and Bob.
For sure our pets learn our to interrupt our eyes, and facial expressions and Madi always got very attentive when my voice tones changed.
I'm pretty sure she thought I was crazy most of the time we 'talked'!
Hugs Cecilia
Love comes through your voice and its soothing to him.
I have never watched the Last of the Mochicans before. I struggled to read it in high school..it just never got my interest.

Beau is such a good listener. I'm pretty sure it's because he loves you so.
Have a fabulous day and rest of the week. Scritches to Beau. ♥
That's a very dramatic movie but yes I can just imagine the look on Beau's sweet face and that makes me smile at the stories you tell him.
Beau reminds me of Tempi, the attentive look and the way she sits. It melts my heart. 😊
No wonder Beau was so attentive - Mom says French is a beautiful language - she taught it in high school as well as math. We like it when our Mom talks to us too.
Woos - Lightning, Misty, and Timber
Kind of like a baby...and I think we would be surprised to know how much English our dogs understand!
I love that you sit with him and tell him stories along with how he sits and listens to you.
