For Purposes of this story told by My Mama, we are GIANTS!
SHE wants you to SEE how I walk on a short leash.
My leash has two handles, one on her wrist and one that she holds that give HER control.
Or so she thinks
Lady Talks-a-Lot is taking over talking today, against my wishes, I might add.
Butt she controls the typing, so what's a dog to do?
Beau walks at my left knee
I walk, he walks,
I stop, he stops.
I talk he talks.
Make that he Waits while I talk. ha ha
I am the Alpha because he weighs more than half my weight and I am old and at times dizzy.
When a line of traffic is coming our way, I say Stay and OK when it is gone.
He knows we Stay! at all the four way stops.
He stayed at Stay when the Chiweenie Terrorist Attacked us a few months ago.
He patiently waits if I talk to a neighbor and loves to get a free pet here and there.
OK, not that doesn't mean you can go, not yet.
I know some of you are saying these commands are quite common.
what is the big deal??
The Deal Is
Beau taught himself a new command.
We follow a set route every day, and he could follow it without me.
the command is
Wait a Minute!
This might sound like the meaning would be the same as the word Stay!
NOPE!
Stay is stand or sit until I say OK you can go.
Wait A Minute means, hesitate until I step out and he follows me.
A slight hesitation of indeterminant time.
We step out our garage door, at the gate, hesitate and lift the lock, push the hard to open gate open wide. Step through .
When we first leave he is excited and rushing to hustle.
He is allowed to walk at the end of the loose leash, until we get to the street.
When we return after walk, I let him go to the end of the leash and I
always say Wait a Minute, while I water the moss rose flowers.
When I get a rock in my shoe, I say wait a minute.
Remove the rock and move on.
We wait a minute for me to close and lock the gate,
he hesitate the proper lengh of time for me to accomplish it.
I hesitate to flip on the pool pump.
He Waits a Minute without being told.
I did not realize I was saying Wait a Minute or that he knew what a meant
Until I noticed he was waiting a minute before I said it.
I stopped saying Wait A Minute and he stops at every place he should.
hesitates and moves on
Each time he does it now, with out the words, I gush words like Good Boy and I laugh.
He Loves when we laugh at him.
He turns upside down for a belly rub and we laugh!
Beau is really good with the word No! He stops immediately. He knows that No means do NOT eat that vomit. Or Poop! or any nasty dead thing in the road.

What can I say to this..he is a genius!!! I think there are really not many dogs that would do this, and he must be the best behaved dog you ever had, or maybe tied with B.B. I love your shoes.
What a smart, beautiful dog you are, Beau!
Bravo Beau... you are the perfect walking team mate.... we know that word NO! too... we think it is part of our names LOL
Beau is such a smart guy. This post reminds me of how Bertie quickly learned what I meant when I called "this way Bertie" although I did not consciously teach him.
What a good boy he is and so smart too.
Beau - I learned 'wipe your feet' like that. Mr B was always yelling it at me if I came tearing in from the garden. Paw smacks Mr T
Hello Beau,
I am happy you are able to take a walk with your Mama now. Good boy Beau! You are a well behaved dog and listen to all the right words. HUGS, have a happy day!
I think you woukd be amazed at what he knows... I thinkmdogsclearn so.much if we talk to.them. and expect them to know.

We never doubted you were a smart one Beau. Have fun on your walks!
He is brilliant and loves you so much!
I'm so happy you're back walking with mom. I know you were not happy when mom was sick. She looks very well now. You're such a handsome and good boy and you listen to mom very well.
Have a woof woof day, Beau. My best to your wonderful peeps. ♥
I'm so very impressed Beau! Love how you're showing momma and daddy (that) you really DO know what they're saying -- and why.
Methinks those professional canines have little on Beau Beaumont!
Beau -tell you Mum that there is something about the words 'dog drool' that has us scrambling for hiding places under the beds. Xxx Mr T
What a great tale of this sweet dude named Beau!!!
OMD, you are such a good puppers Beau!!!! Even better than MOI, (butts don't tells Ma I said that, k? 😂)
I would have given that Chi all the barks it gave, and then some! BOL!!!
You keeps your Moms safe, and steady, and keep being the pawsome doggie you are my furiend!!!
Kisses,
Ruby ♥
Beau is such a smart and good boy. We've learned lots of words and phrases that our pawrents didn't really teach us either.
Beau is a terrific Dog! And so intelligent!
Cinnamon is pretty much the same. She was not really leash trained until David was in the hospital and she had to come to Vancouver to live with me. And I am impressed with how well she now follows commands. (and anticipates the "wait" I throw at her - especially when we are going past the deer and she thinks that she should bark and chase them). I hope the dizzies are getting a little better.
Such a sweet story. Beau and you are the perfect walking partners. I'm so glad that you can walk again!
That's cool that he is doing on his own without you saying anything!
He has your body cues as a reinforcement. With Lexi, I discovered that I had the tiniest of tiny clues that she picked up on.
Beau is a smart boy, no doubt about it.
And if I don't want something to be a habit that I'm nagged about, I have to be careful to be unpredictable about it, and not do it at the same time each day.
Looks like Beau's habits are good ones!
Hi friend, Ojo here! We're pretty smart, us Dogs... The humans don't give us enough credit. Of course you know when you're supposed to wait a minute! You are a Very Good Dog indeed.
