Mama Here: Big Boy appears to have no vocabulary. He doesn't recognize words like eat or food, go walk, inside, outside. YET!
We talk to him all the time and he is quickly learning. He now knows what Go in the house means. Go walk. He does know Sit, Come, Stay, but that was it.
We think he never had conversations with his previous owners. He is learning words quickly. We are not to the point where we have to spell words so he doesn't know what we are thinking about.

I can tell by your eyes that you are a thinking dog, BB, and the ears are telling me you are still in assessment mode re this modelling malarkey! Your hyooman vocab will develop fast, that's plain. hugs and wags YAM-aunty xxx

Big Boy looks SO much like Tom's black lab, Brewster. Because he nearly took my left leg off (another story, another post), I've been cautious around larger black dogs. Until now. Big Boy is such a sweetheart. I can feel it in your words!
PS - Cute collar! Did the shelter gift that to you?
Maybe he was in a Spanish household or some other language? Glad he is getting some new training. He sure got a great new home.
Didn't animal control just find him somewhere? So then you would not know any history on him. It seems like he was totally ignored, and also not treated well. One of the good things about having pets is that you can talk to them, rather than to yourself!
So many new experiences.
I bet Big Boy is a quick study and will have all those words figured out in no time. I can't imagine having a dog and not talking to it.
We bet you figure out what your pawrents are saying in no time, BB!!
