Abused from birth..... Jakes Story

May of 2005, I received a call from my friend Melinda. she said there is a dog starving in our street, we are trying to entice him with food to help him. If we can capture him, do you want him? he looks like a boxer mix and you said you like boxers.

I ask you to look at that first photo and say you would not take this dog. Most of you would not. the moment Hubby and I laid eyes on this starving mutt with marks where he had been hit and kicked, a scar accross his small nose, we were SUNK.
we picked him up and brought him home.

Picked up on Thursday, Vet on Saturday for shots. Sunday he refused to eat, he collasped and on Monday I rushed him to the vet and left him. they called me at work and said, Jake has Parvo, we need to put him down. there is no cure for Parvo, a disease that eats holes in the intestines.

Weight 12 pounds, should be 20

We had him only 3 short days, but our hearts had engaged, in tears I said can't you do anything? He said IV and antibiotics with maybe a 50/50 chance of survival, at least a week on IV.
I called home and said to hubby, "what shall I do?" they say even after a week he might still die. Hubby said
"tell them to do what they can for him and give it a try"

8 days later we brought him home, the above photos were taken the day we brought hime home from hospital. he could hardly stand.
(the vet said since we saved a street dog he would cut our bill in half, 600 instead of 1200)

Above is 8 weeks later, Jake was 4 months when we got him, now he is 5 years 4 months old and looks like this.

He is very smart, very loving and our beloved Jake (see sidebar for current photos)
current weight is 47, perfect for his build

Bless you for rescuing such a handsome dog. All my dogs have been rescue. We only had Max for a few years and he had so many health problems and emotional problems but was a happy fellow as well. My Daisy is obviously older than they thought but a loving cocker... she was within 30 minutes of being gassed at a south carolina shelter, before making her way to Richmond where I found her online. I've had two off the street and two from shelters. Rescues are the most appreciative dogs.

Oh, my, what a wonderful story!!! I knew you had rescued him, but didn't know all this. The pictures are just pathetic! The picture by the chair, he looks like he is so scared that he's hiding. You truly have a heart of gold. I am so SICK of seeing abused animals on the local news all the time. Is it just here, or do you see it there? It's always horses or dogs or cats, and it is so bad I can't even watch when they show it.

4th one down speaks of so much sadness..although all obviously show neglect! Praise God.. so glad you could do this Sandra! Nowm, what a sweet contented baby!
This morning our dog came in and just pushed her nose softly against my nose..just to check on me! It was just one of the many insigificantly significant gestures..why I love her/them so much! Life can be so sad and there with much ignorance..but happy Jake found such a lovely home with mom & pop- where he can express all the love he has too:))

I am soooo glad you rescued Jake. Both my Foxie and Shadow were rescued. I cannot, just cannot relate to or understand people who abuse helpless creatures. :( Thanks! for giving Jake a great home.

Oh wow! He really was abused before you got him! That is so sad! Parvo is such a hard thing to get rid of and pricey too. I'm glad that you and your husband decided to try to save his life. He really looks great now! I'm sure he is so appreciative of you guys for it too.

Jake you are the most beautiful dog and the luckiest to have found such a kind and giving forever family. It breaks my heart to see those first pictures that show how neglected and abused Jake was, but what a great happy ending for him and you. Thank you for taking the chance you did with Jake, he will pay it back many times over to you in his lifetime. Ann

This story tugged at my heart! I shed a few tears. My goodness, God wanted this pup to share in your home and enjoy all the love he could. I am apalled at the sickening sights of animals being abused. My son saved Stella a few years ago lying in the middle of a road. I think she wanted to die! Now she wants to hog all the dog treats and push her way to the front of the love line. We walk in the door at night from work, exhausted, and the pets line up like this is the best part of their day! Hee Hee! That Stella is a flirt too. We would not trade her for all the money in the world! Thanks for sharing this beautiful story. I know another dog who contracted parvo and lived. I think sometime God just has other plans for these tortured souls although this handsome fellow Jake looks happy as a clam! Anne

I thought they treet dogs like this only in pour countries, where they have lack of food - but you present is different...
I love dogs and I am extremely touched by yours and Jake's story, and I cry, but I also smile...
